The mandibular condylar process is a bony projection that extends from the posterior part of the mandible, also known as the lower jawbone. It serves as the hinge joint of the mandible, allowing for movement of the jaw during speaking, chewing, and other functions. The condylar process is covered with a layer of articular cartilage, which provides a smooth surface for movement against the temporal bone of the skull. It is also attached to various muscles and ligaments that facilitate jaw movement and stabilize the joint. Dysfunction or damage to the mandibular condylar process can result in conditions such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD), which can cause pain, clicking or popping during movement, and limited jaw function.
